Using Art to Inspire Yourself & Your Students

In this workshop faculty from around CCV came together to recharge and rekindle imagination. We not only created these symbolic collages, but we learned how using our hands actually shapes our brain, language and culture, and how making art draws attention to what is significant to humans.

Collage and Art Journaling

It was late spring and I wanted color. This collage was created exclusively from material cut from magazines. While thinking about a Creativity Workshop I was asked to give I thought about collaging journal covers. This could be a wonderful social activity and an inexpensive and meaningful project that could be used as an ice-breaker or to meet various learning objectives. There are some great resources on journalling and collage. I have listed some titles on the sidebar to the right!

This Collage Brought to You by the Letter "C"

I do not remember where I read about magazine collage, but I began making collage when I was in grad school. To me collage comes from a certain serendipity brought out by the materials used. I grab a bunch of the magazines laying around my house and cut out words or images that catch my eye at that moment; then arrange these elements and maybe add a touch of paint here and there. In this collage I added photos that I printed on my ink jet printer of a tree and a brain synapse to tie the other graphics together. What works for me about this process is that you use recycled or found items, can do the art in several sittings, and then find meaning in these collages long after they are completed. Alliteration is a theme here.
